Wenshan Yu is an award-winning London-based composer specializing in film music, classical composition, and electronic score. Currently studying at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Wenshan has developed a diverse portfolio and a keen ability to translate a director’s vision into compelling musical storytelling.

With original music for over 20 short films, Wenshan has developed a strong command of orchestral writing, conducting, and recording. Her score for If I Raised My Mother contributed to the film’s success, earning the MullenLowe NOVA Award and a sweep of prizes at the Bournemouth International Film Festival, including Best Sound / Composer – Animation and Best UK Animation. Films she has scored have also been selected for major festivals such as the London International Animation Festival (LIAF) and the BAFTA-qualifying Thessaloniki Animation Festival (TAF). These honours reflect her ability to craft music that drives narrative and emotional resonance.

In January 2026, Wenshan’s flute–viola–harp trio inspired by Monet’s Antibes opened a Courtauld Gallery programme of new music. In March 2025, her string quartet, inspired by Salvator Rosa’s Witches at their Incantations, was performed as the grand finale of a “Friday Lates” concert at the National Gallery, demonstrating her ability to translate powerful visual art into an evocative musical narrative. Earlier, her orchestral work The Ancient Market Place premiered at the Wimbledon Community Orchestra’s Christmas Concert in 2022, receiving enthusiastic feedback from both the audience and the musicians.

In June 2025, Wenshan composed original piano and electronics music for the Barbican event A Colour Box: Silent Film & Live Music, contributing to a new score for the final silent film Merry Frolics of Satan, which she performed live on piano. This collaboration highlighted her innovative approach to creating hybrid scores that blend acoustic performance with electronic sound in a cinematic context.

With a distinctive voice that bridges classical tradition, cinematic storytelling, and modern soundscapes, Wenshan Yu brings emotional depth and narrative clarity to every project—making her a valuable collaborator in film, concert, and multimedia settings.
